Arlington Garden Club News

Jeff Young, Vermont Master Gardener and Curator of Lilacs for the University of
Vermont Horticulture Farm in South Burlington, will be guest speaker at the
Arlington Garden Club's meeting on Tuesday, June 16, at the Lions Pavilion at
the Arlington Park and Recreation Area.  Members will gather at 12 noon for a
brown bag lunch, followed by the business meeting conducted by Club
president, Dot Closs.  Dessert and beverages will be provided by the hostess
committee, headed by June Sherwin, assisted by Wendy Bucchieri, Phyllis
Jakubowski, Pat McAward and Gay Thimm.

"The ABC's of Lilacs" will be discussed by Jeff Young, with pointers on the soil
and sun requirements for healthy lilacs, the best varieties for Vermont gardens,
their care and feeding, potential diseases and threats, and a brief history of this
popular tree or shrub, including how and when lilacs arrived in New England
and where they originated.  Widely in demand as a speaker, Jeff is a Board
member of the International Lilac Society, and has headed up a St. Albans
community project to revitalize a city park, using community members,
particularly individuals working toward their Master Gardener designation.

A feature of the afternoon will be the planting of shrubs donated by the Club to
the Park as a part of its civic beautification efforts.  For further information,
please call Ms. Closs at 375-6869.  Members are reminded to bring a donation for
The Arlington Food Bank.
