As you may remember last year, the Burdett Board decided not to request a 2009 Town appropriation from
Arlington, Sunderland, or Sandgate due to the economic conditions that our communities were experiencing and
due to the fact that since our move to the Arlington Community House in December of 2007, we had found
ourselves in a time of transition. Much of 2008 was spent without a director and has caused a “rebuilding” to be
needed. Our director in 2009, Christina Altieri, met with students at AMHS and was able to engage some of them
in a beginning transformation of the space that would be theirs. Youth painted, cleaned “house” and shared
some of their ideas of what could happen at the center. Unfortunately Christina had to leave us this past Fall. We
thank her for her efforts on behalf of the youth of Arlington, Sunderland, and Sandgate. This event could have
placed us in another “backslide” but we were fortunate that a former director, Amy Kerner, moved back into the
area and was willing to come back on board as our director. Some of you may have attended the open house that
Amy held on December 14th. Amy’s focus for the New Year is to re-establish a youth advisory board that would
be the “driving force” for Burdett activity.
We will work this year to provide healthy activities for our young community members while providing them with
experiences in community participation and service as well as provide opportunities for youth of the communities
to meet , play games, and be together, enjoying healthy & safe activities. We continue to sponsor a website for
any nonprofit in the area to post their activities on an internet calendar, to publish contacts and mission, and to
otherwise coordinate activities with other groups in the area. Though our present focus is on youth , we are also
an organization for all community members. Last spring when there was interest in quilting, a multi-age group met
with Denise Watts as our instructor to learn quilting basics, achieve personal projects, and create a quilt that was
raffled and benefit the Summer Lunch Program.
As with many organizations we are feeling the pressure of societal demands on people hindering their being able
to volunteer as they have in the past. Our need at present is one of enlarging our board to represent more of the
organizations in the area. When we first organized in 1999 this was most helpful in coordinating and being able to
understand the needs of the community. At the time of our incorporation all schools, churches, the Council on
Aging, Red Cross, Arlington Community Club, and Police Advisory Board had representation on the Burdett
Board. Today not all of these groups have representation. We welcome anyone who would like to join our vision
of a coordinated community of events, a mentoring of youth for community service learning, and programs that
promote healthy community. We meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 7PM at the Arlington Community
House, Burdett Room. For more information, contact
